Skeletal strength provides nutrients required by the body to manufacture bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and skin. These nutrients counteract many of the forces that rob the structural system of strength and flexibility under mechanical stress, so it is supportive of the whole of the structural system.

Bone is dynamic, constantly being broken down and built up, and other aspect of the structural system are prone to wear and tear and damage. Women in particular are prone to bone loss once they have gone through the menopause, where bone is broken down faster than it is replaced, leaving a net loss.
